Wrapup for 2007

2007 was a thrilling year Saving Mom and Dad . In six months on the festival circuit, this film has nabbed 20 selections in 9 countries, including two prizes and Opening Night Film honors at the Spinning Wheel Sikh Festival in Toronto.  Among the more surprising selections was Poland, where the Euroshorts prize will translate into a 15 city tour of Poland.  Could anyone involved have foreseen popularity for the film in Eastern Europe? Another surprise was the warm welcome received at the... [Lire la suite]

Audience Award in Italy

Just a fortnight after winning at Euroshorts in Warsaw, Saving Mom and Dad rolled into the River to River Florence Indian Film Festival.  In its seventh year now, this Italian festival specializes in films related to India.  It has gained a great reputation throughout Italy as well as in India and the Indian diaspora.  This year was a banner year for River to River.  For the first time, the festival was held in the Cinema Gambrinus, a gorgeous cinema built at the dawn of moving pictures.  This red... Three Smaller US Cities This Fall

This Fall, after some play in Europe and larger markets like LA and New York, Saving Mom and Dad is being shown in some smaller US venues, places that are more maybe representative of American values and culture. Bend, Oregon is home to BendFilm. In early October, we had the opportunity to show in front of a feature. Usually festivals show short films in blocks and it is kind of grab bag. I find that depending upon what other films are in the program and the order of the films screened, people can be more or less receptive... [Lire la suite]

Travelogue: Bradford, UK - September 2007

Friday, 21 September 2007 I had never been to the North of England, and I kept thinking it would be just like the images I had from East is East, my favorite Indian diaspora film.  After a comfortable flight in, and a major traffic jam getting in to Bradford,  I managed to get to the National Museum just in time to snag a glass of white wine at the opening night cocktail.  A lively dance troupe was working the crowd and in a corner, I saw a cameraman interviewing Jimi Mistry (star of East is East). ... Director Statement

Ravi is the anchor of my film. His strong point of view will emerge from us always being with him and on his face as he takes things in — with whatever emotion is there — enthusiasm, surprise, disappointment or confusion. The slightest change in facial expression will bring us closer to Ravi. The Indian family will be shown in as real a way as possible. Nothing will be done to make them especially exotic. No sitar music will be there to accompany their every move, nor incense burning nor goofy smiling and humorous Indian... [Lire la suite]
